The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) strengthens democracy around the world through private enterprise and market-oriented reform. CIPE is one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy and is an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since 1983, CIPE has worked with business leaders, policymakers, and civil society to build the institutions vital to a democratic society. CIPE’s key program areas include Enterprise Ecosystems, Democratic Governance, Business Advocacy, Anti-Corruption & Ethics and Trade.
Position: Deputy Director
Reports to: Director
Scope: CIPE is seeking a full-time, exempt position based in Washington, D.C. for a Deputy Director (DD) to manage all strategic, programmatic, administrative, and fundraising activities for a program focused on the due diligence challenges faced by businesses operating in emerging markets. Tasks include CIPE brand promotion, business development, and human resources management of the team in close coordination with the Director. The DD will supervise specific portfolios of countries/projects as needed/appropriate, provide guidance and coaching to the managers of other programs on the team, execute team-wide management functions, and will supervise and mentor staff in Washington, DC. As a senior staff member, the DD will also contribute to the overall strategic direction of CIPE programs and the organization. The DD represents CIPE at high-level internal and external meetings and leads outreach efforts with the CIPE board, companies, donors, international organizations, and peer organizations.
Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Assist in developing projects’ strategy.
- Supervise staff as required.
- Provide guidance, coaching and other forms of support to managers on the team to help them develop, implement, and improve their programs.
- Serve as a professional and technical resource for other program teams from across CIPE, especially on matters relating to corporate compliance and due diligence.
- Uphold CIPE’s organizational values of local ownership, inclusion, learning and innovation, and accountability as well as adherence to the organization and its mission.
- Establish and maintain relationships with donor organizations and democracy and private sector stakeholders for business integrity
- Advance CIPE’s thought leadership on CIPE’s core themes by authoring articles and content for other publications.
- Represent CIPE and promote CIPE’s work at panels, workshops, conferences, or other events in Washington, D.C. and around the world.
- Lead virtual and in-person events on core CIPE themes including providing comments to media.
- Contribute to the positioning of CIPE as a thought leader in CIPE’s areas of work, and apply this thought leadership to CIPE’s programs.
- Represent CIPE, its work, and organizational values in all interactions with relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure application of lessons learned both in the team and from other departments.
- Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate staff performance and consultants on an ongoing basis.
- Lead and support professional growth of members of the team.
- Contribute to an organization-wide culture of innovation, integrity, and high performance.
- Act as primary program director of a portfolio of projects in one or more countries/ themes.
- Supervise staff assigned to portfolio(s) including Washington, D.C.- and field-based managers, country directors and other staff, when applicable.
- Monitor key events and trends bearing on CIPE’s work on business integrity and analyze opportunities (and challenges) for advancing CIPE’s mission and goals.
- Communicate effectively with donors, partners, regional staff, and CIPE management and finance departments to ensure compliance with project objectives and reporting requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in one the following fields is required: International Relations, International Business, Economic Development, Political Science, or Public Policy.
- Master’s degree, or the equivalent experience in International Relations, International Business, Economic Development, Political Science, or Public Policy is preferred.
- Juris Doctor degree is preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of combined professional experience with corporate compliance and due diligence programs, as well as international assistance programs required
- Proven supervisory skills with at least five years’ experience managing staff
- Ability to supervise, develop, and manage young professionals and other staff, when applicable.
- Demonstrated strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English) and at least one other language, preferably Spanish, French, or Russian
- Strong presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good relationships with international partners, organizations, private and public sector representatives and donors.
- Flexibility to collaborate with a diverse team, in multiple locations and time zones, or work independently and deliver consistent, reliable results.
- Must be able and willing to travel for extended and multiple periods depending on assigned portfolio/team.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, establish, and direct good relationships with international partners and donors.
- High degree of culture competence.
- Contribute to an organization-wide culture of innovation, integrity, inclusion, and respect.
THE SALARY RANGE FOR THIS ROLE IS $104,000-$135,000
